
Sift Kaur Samra made a statement by defeating fellow countrywoman Ashi Chouksey by 1.3 points to win the gold medal in the women’s 50-meter rifle 3-position event on Tuesday at the World University Games in Chengdu, China.
After scoring the second-best 1180 in the previous 120-shot qualifying format, Sift shot 462.9 in the final. Manini Kaushik placed eighth despite making the final.
India strengthened its position at the top of the medals table in shooting after the three of Sift, Ashi, and Manini defeated China by two points to win the team gold.
The men’s air pistol and women’s sports pistol events of the day featured less-talented Indian shooters.
Varun Tomar qualified for the air pistol final but finished eighth. Varun, together with Arjun Singh Cheema and Anmol Jain, took bronze as a team behind Korea and China. Manu Bhaker missed the final of the women’s sports pistol by two points. She had already won gold in the air pistol. The Indian team came fourth, after China, Korea, and Iran, with Abhidnya Patil and Chinki Yadav as the other two members.
